چکیده

layer is not altered by a five-hundred fold change in the surrounding pressure. Further evidence for believing that a condition characteristic of the metal itself has been reached is furnished by the fact that the photoelectric sensitivity of an outgassed specimen remains constant for twelve hours after heat treatment. The work of Davisson and Germer9 on electron reflection from nickel is also against such a point of view. They found that it takes several hours for the characteristic reflection to be obscured by the accumulation of gas on the surface. The work is being continued and a more complete report will be published soon. In conclusion, the author desires to acknowledge his appreciation to Dr. C. E. Mendenhall, under whose direction the work was carried on. 1 DuBridge, Phys. Rev., 29, 451 (1927). 2 Warner, Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., 13, 56 (1927). 3Kazda, Phys. Building a Science of Teaching Physics

Individual teachers of college level physics sometimes develop deep insights into how their students learn and what elements of classroom instruction are valuable in facilitating the learning process. Yet these insights rarely persist beyond the individual instructor. Educational methods seem to cycle from one fad to another, rarely cumulating increasingly powerful knowledge in the way scientis...

Performing the Millikan experiment at the molecular scale: Determination of atomic Millikan-Thomson charges by computationally measuring atomic forces

An atomic version of the Millikan oil drop experiment is performed computationally. It is shown that for planar molecules, the atomic version of the Millikan experiment can be used to define an atomic partial charge that is free from charge flow contributions. We refer to this charge as the Millikan-Thomson (MT) charge. Since the MT charge is directly proportional to the atomic forces under a u...

Millikan Lecture 1999: The Workplace, Student Minds, and Physics Learning Systems

We review three important ideas concerning physics education. First, what do surveys from the workplace indicate about the relative importance in student education of scientific process knowledge, personal skills, and conceptual physics knowledge? Second, what are the characteristics of student minds that need to acquire this knowledge and these skills? Finally, what can we do with physics lear...

New directions for gravity-wave physics via “Millikan oil drops”

Pairs of Planck-mass–scale drops of superfluid helium coated by electrons (i.e., “Millikan oil drops”), when levitated in the presence of strong magnetic fields and at low temperatures, can be efficient quantum transducers between electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational (GR) radiation. A Hertz-like experiment, in which EM waves are converted at the source into GR waves, and then back-converted a...

AWARDS Millikan Lecture 2009: Physics for all: From special needs to Olympiads

Can “all” students learn “real” physics? Physics First and Physics for All have become a success story for thousands of students in urban, suburban, and rural districts. At the same time, the International Physics Olympiad and other competitions have raised the expectation of what the most motivated students can achieve. Many physics educators are exploring ways to set higher goals for our most...
